Elemental Joy Review
I have a special place in my heart for Cotton Babies cloth diapers. Econobums prefolds & covers were our first cloth diapers. Next, bumGenuis 4.0 cloth diapers were our first pockets and cloth diapering sparked my interest for Eco-friendly brands and this website! When I saw that Cotton Babies was releasing yet another line of diapers, Elemental Joy, I had to order some to test out! Here is our review of Elemental Joy, lots of photos and some affiliate links for purchase.
I ordered a set of diapers and thought these would be great to test out. I was excited to open the package and have my first look at this diaper line. To be honest, my initial reaction wasn’t great. The diapers felt thin compared to our BG 4.0 and 5.0 diapers and the flat insert felt very much like the thickness of a flour sack towel. However, I knew I needed to prep the insert and give this a full test drive before making an real judgement. Take a look below. My son is nearly 2 and 38 lbs, he really shows the max size for diapers for babies and toddlers.

Elemental Joy compared to bumGenius 5.0
If you’re shopping at Cotton Babies and wondering if the BG 5.0 is worth more than double of the Elemental Joy, you’ll want to see this comparison. While the Elemental Joy comes with a Birdseye flat, the BG 5.0 comes with a synthetic microfiber insert. One point for Elemental Joy, I prefer natural fiber inserts.
Major differences are the presence of the fabric fold on the stay-dry lining, aka blowout flap, on the back of the 5.0, a slightly larger cut for the Elemental Joy. Another difference is the presence of PUL on the inside of the 5.0. This helps prevent pee from wicking up onto clothing and covers some of the top snaps. However, if you change baby as often as needed and have enough absorbency hopefully pee-wicking won’t be an issue.
The snap pattern and placement seems identical. The lining and PUL (waterproof layer) of the BG 5.0 does feel a bit thicker. The BG 5.0 also has a stretch to the tab and full stay-dry lining throughout the diaper. As you can see, there is PUL piping all the way around the Elemental Joy diaper. Is this better? That’s really personal preference.
The line is fairly new so time will tell about differences in durability and leg elastic relaxation.
Is the BG5.0 better? I think this diaper has the upper hand with the insert and the price is amazing. I invested in similarly priced Alva baby straight from China diapers for my 3rd son. They were used for 3+ years with great durability. For this price…it’s a USA made cloth diaper with a natural fiber insert. You can’t go wrong! Move over “China cheapies” there’s a new, quality affordable diaper in town!
I found that after fully prepping the insert and pad folding it, I got 10 layers! Yes! 10 layers! To my surprise, I like this diaper. It’s a bit bigger than the 5.0 you see above, but fits the flat cloth diaper really well. I would recommend these to someone searching for a great priced cloth diaper that competes with similar low-cost diapers (without the CPSIA compliance) from overseas.
High-five Cotton Babies.
Downsides? Like I said, we’ll see over time if the diapers prove to be durable. However, Cotton Babies has great customer service so I wouldn’t let that deter you from adding these.
The flat may not be enough absorbency for heavy wetting babies…but then again, what is? However you can easily add a booster to the diaper and a flat is so easy to wash and dry!
