doTERRA is well known for producing therapeutic grade, high quality essential oils with research and science backing their ingredients. In addition to single oils, they offer several essential oil blends including doTERRA Breathe. What’s Breathe? Breathe is an essential oil blend made up of oils that help soothe respiratory symptoms. Move over Vicks chest rub…there is science and plant ingredients in this oil! Read about the essential oil and how it’s used.
As an asthmatic, I have had my share of both natural and chemical treatments. From sitting in the shower as a make-shift steam room to getting injected with epinephrine…I’ve been through it all. Luckily, as I’ve gotten older the asthma I suffered from as a child has lessened. I’ve also taken steps to remove the carpeting from our home, limit chemicals in my life and stay well hydrated.

Where chest rubs fall short
Chest rubs have always been a go-to for my family. I remember my Mom slathering Vicks on my chest and she even reports being given the rub by mouth by her Mom, my Grandmother, before they “knew better.” Why Vicks? The active ingredients in the chest rub are Eucalyptus oil, synthetic Camphor (camphor laurel) and Mehthol. Inactive ingredients include: cedarleaf oi, nutmeg oil, petrolatum, thymol and turpentine oil. (1)
Yes, you read that right. Turpentine oil. As in, paint thinner. Even overlooking the petrolatum and turpentine…while some of these ingredients have been known to help with respiration and relieve cough symptoms, they certainly aren’t painstakingly derived and the Camphor is even synthetic ie chemical based.
Looking for something better.
After becoming a Mom, I started to look for natural ways to treat cold and respiratory symptoms in my own children. I refused to turn to the products I grew up with and started researching options. I read about the benefits of therapeutic grade Eucalyptus and bought the oil as a stand alone. What’s therapeutic grade? Basically, the way the oil is extracted from the plant matters. Things like heating it up and mistreating it decreases it’s effectiveness. Through researching, I later learned about the combination of oils in doTERRA Breathe and switched to it!

What’s in doTERRA Breathe?
Unlike the chest rub I described, doTERRA Breathe is made up of therapeutic grade essential oils. Ingredients are doTERRA Breathe is made of “…Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara.” This combination helps to maintan “…feelings of clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal threats.” In my opinion, it’s wonderful to inhale when I’m stuffy, when my chest feels tight and I enjoy using it on my children as well.
How can doTERRA Breathe be used?
There are several ways to use doTERRA Breath. Like doTERRA Terrashield, another oil blend used for repelling insects, 1-2 drops can be applied to the skin either directly or in a carrier, used in a mist or dispersed in an essential oil diffuser. (2) I love putting this in a diffuser and running it at night in our bedrooms. The diffuser lets off a soft glow and works as a nightlight and everyone seems to sleep better with the oil scent in the air.
- doTERRA Breathe can be applied topically
- to the chest
- bottoms of feet
- Diffused in an essential oil diffuser
- Company recommends 3-4 drops in diffuser
- Daytime or nighttime to promote restful sleep
Who can use doTERRA Breathe?
The oil fact sheet doesn’t offer an age range. However, if you are worried about placing this on topically you can use a diffuser or test a small area on the wrist. Placing the oil, or any oil, in a carrier such as coconut oil or unscented lotion, lessens the direct impact on the skin and can help with sensitivities. Obviously, like with all oils, avoid placing them in your ears, mouth, eyes or other sensitive areas. Consult your physician with any questions pertaining to individual health.
Where can you buy doTERRA Breathe?
doTERRA Breathe is reasonably priced and has lasted my family a long time. While it may be available from other sites, it is not coming directly from the company and you can’t be 100% sure of what you’re getting. I know I purchased some salon shampoo and conditioner from Amazon in the past that was definitely cut with something that was not the expensive shampoo and since then, I buy items like this directly from the company.
Cautions with essential oils
Directly from doTERRA: “Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. Avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying product.”
While I understand the need to place a legal disclaimer with the oils, as a breastfeeding Mom to 4 small babies…one of the primary reasons I use oils is because I believe in a natural lifestyle. I do follow product recommendations and guidelines and love having oils in our life!
