DeliBru Reusable K-Cup Review
Reusable K Cups are vital to our continued use of single cup brewers and the preservation of our planet. The human population is creating plastic waste at an alarming rate. In 2015, Keurig sold more than 9,000,000,000 K Cups alone. (1) While recyclable K Cups are being released, the majority of the single coffee pods are not recyclable and wind up in landfils, the ocean and our environment.
Reusable K Cups are the answer
I was hesitant to try a reusable K Cup because, to be honest, I didn’t think it would work. Perhaps also a bit of laziness too. What I had was working already, right? However, people have been doing single serve coffee like espresso for a long time, plastic-free.
When I saw the opportunity to receive a sample of these cups I applied. The result? I’m thrilled that the reusable k cup works in my keurig, I can adjust the amount of coffee used and the coffee tastes better then a disposable k cup. I was using compostable k cups but, to my disappointment, the filters often busted and filled my coffee with grounds. How to use a Resuable K Cup
When I received this 4-pack of resuable K cups, I was surprised at how light the package was. To be honest, I put off using them for a few days. Having another compostable K cup explode in my Keurig brewer really gave me the push. I opened the box and gave them a try.
First, I bought a really awesome coffee. Usually I drink Drunkin Donuts but I found the same Kaui coffee that was in the compostable pod, in a ground coffee. I found that using a scoop is the least messy to fill the pod, and you can fill several ahead of time. I tried 1 tablespoon but prefer 1.5 tablespoons and they’re nothing short of amazing.
It’s important to not fill the reusable K cup to the top. See the bump on the K cup lid? It needs room to press into the grounds. I use the back of the coffee scoop to leave an impression in the coffee grounds and to pack them in a bit. Next, I set my machine to 10 ounces and “strong.” How I usually brew my coffee and I’m pleased to say that these work well, don’t have the plastic taste disposable K cups have and I love that they’re not hurting the environment!
I’m using a Keurig K575 (there is a banner at the bottom) because it has the option to brew “strong.” Weak coffee was my major complaint about all Keurig brewers and the reason we didn’t own one until a few months ago. I’m pleased to say that with the right coffee and the strong setting, I brew a great cup of coffee and really save on coffee grounds. If I brew 4 cups in my coffee pot I use 3.5 tablespoons and if I brew myself a 10oz cup in the Keurig I use 1.5 tablespoons. Awesome, right?
