Cloth diapering a newborn is challenging. Typically, newborns pee a lot and need tiny diapers. This presents a challenge. There needs to be a balance between absorbency and fit. You don’t want baby in a diaper so trim it needs to be changed in 15 minutes or a diaper so thick and absorbent that baby is stuck in a full split!

Elizabeth, owner of Purple Unicorn Diapers tested this diaper out with her newborn. Hear her thoughts below!

Why I wanted to try the bumGenius Littles 2.0

In addition to a long history of quality and USA production, owner Jennifer Labit is trying to further the reach of the cloth diaper industry to include those in need. She created the Cotton Babies Share the love organization, a non-profit national diaper bank. She hopes to eliminate diaper needs through her efforts and have cloth on every bum.

I was really excited to try the Bumgenius Little when I had my newest baby. My children are always small at birth, all under 7lbs, and they never quite fit into newborn cloth diapers until they gain a few pounds. The Bumgenius Little fit my 6lb daughter great! There was just a tiny little gap in the leg area and the waist is perfect. The inside is organic cotton which is perfect for a small baby’s sensitive skin. I like that the Bumgenius Little includes a 2 sided doubler. Organic cotton on one side if you need natural materials, or stay dry material if your baby hates to feel wet. Plus, the doubler gives you extra absorbency if you have a heavy wetter or just need to keep the diaper on a little longer.

The Bumgenius Little is an all in one, which means there is no attached soaker or pocket to stuff. The absorbent layer is sewn into the middle of the diaper so you can just toss it into the wash without removing anything. This is great when you don’t have much time to wash diapers because you have a newborn and need sleep instead. The downside to all in ones is they do require extra drying time to make sure the absorbent layer is dry.  When I dried it in the dryer, it took an extra 20 min. When I hung it to dry, it took about an exra 4 to 5 hours.

The Bumgenius Little fit my newborn really well. I especially liked that the waist really did stay beneath her umbilical cord.  There are also 8 snaps across the top of the waist so I can adjust the fit as she grows. There is no snap down rise, which my husband loves he hates all the snaps, so it won’t fit as long as some other diaper brands, but it fits smaller babies better.

Downsides and room for improvement

The absorbancy is not that great on the Bumgenius Little.  I did have to change my newborn sooner than some other diapers even with the extra doubler. I added a washcloth folded under the doubler and that helped a lot. Since my newborn has tiny chicken legs, there is a small gap in the legs. This has led to a few explosions out those holes. The waist has been good for keeping explosions in, but until she gains some weight, the gaping is an issue.

I would say the Bumgenius Little is a great fit for the smaller newborns. It protects the umbilical area nicely until it heals. It isn’t too bulky or cumbersome. Definitely, a good addition to your stash if you know your new addition will be on the smaller size. Just make sure you have a doubler or extra insert because the absorbancy may not be enough. Plus, the Bumgenius Little comes in a variety of colors and prints so there is something for everyone!

The absorbency isn’t great but is it better than the original?
