Bum Genius Elemental Review
bumGenius elemental 2.0 review (also known as NBGE)
Bum Genius 4.0 pockets were some of our first cloth diapers. Our cloth journey began when we were gifted set of econobums with 2 covers and 12 prefolds. I loved cloth right away and wanted to expand our stash. I was told that Bum Genuis (BG) 4.0 diapers were the best, and I slowly started building our collection. Now, over 2.5 years later, some of our BG 4.0s are over 2 years old and still in our rotation! You can see how our BG 4.0s have held up, and why so many people use and recommend this brand. While our current stash contains many brands, our BGs are truly a stash staple.
While we are very familiar with BG 4.0s, this is our first experience with bumGenius Elemental. I wanted to share the details of this diaper with you, and took some photos of it new – out of the package. As you can see, this All-in-one (AIO) diaper has the same shell design as the rest of the BG collection, however the interior is very different. This all-in-one features Organic cotton, a PUL water resistant outer layer, and USA construction. Have a look:

Designed to fit babies 8-35 lbs the Bum Genius elemental 2.0, now known as E3, is easy for caregivers of all cloth abilities to use. Unlike pocket diapers, all-in-2s (AI2) or shells with prefolds these diapers stay in one piece. The absorbent organic cotton layers you see below never come out of the diaper, and this washes and wears as a whole item. Grandma found this diaper appealing because it takes the guesswork out of stuffing diapers. While it saves time on stuffing pockets, I personally prefer to wash my inserts separately from my shells and will have to get used to washing the diaper as a whole. See new bumGenius elemental version E3 bumGenius elemental 3.0 here.
Unlike some of our AIOs that have the layers touching and attached to the shell, this diaper dries much faster and pre-rinses easier. As you can see, the layers can physically be lifted from the shell and pinned to line-dry indoors or out. Looking at the visible PUL, it reminds me of our Econobum shells without the sewn on fabric. While both of my 30+ lb toddlers required a booster under these layers, as you can see they can be folded and placed where needed in the smallest settings. This creates more absorbency – and – in a few weeks I’ll fill you in on fit and function with our newborn!
