bumGenius BIG Review
I was excited when Cotton Babies announced the new bumGenius BIG and Bigger cloth diapers. A major cloth brand with diapers to fit older children and even adults?! Yes, please. The bumGenius Big fits approximately 35-70 lbs and the Bigger fits 70-120 lbs. I ordered two for my 47 lb 5.5-year-old son to test them out and here are our results!
I finally stopped “potty training” and moved into acceptance. Potty training was a long venture for us. There were times when he seemed totally trained and there are still times when we have a full-on relapse back to total dependence on diapers. I used to field questions and concerns from friends and family, I now embrace my child’s needs and take the opportunity to test out new brands and diapers to hopefully help other families with larger cloth diaper needs.
About my son. My son is currently 5.5 years old, about 47 lbs and a ball of energy and fun. He was diagnosed with a bone tumor disorder shortly after he turned two and he has had two surgeries, and counting, and he has a deformed and shorter leg from the large tumor. This means that he wears a special shoe, uses a wheelchair for long distances, has a noticeably affected gait…and like any other 5.5 year old child, loves life!
A bumGenius 4.0 was his first pocket cloth diaper! In fact, the print was Albert, just as you see here! I couldn’t wait to get the same print in a diaper that actually fits him to test out and he adores the print too! Here are our findings.

They don’t come with an insert
The insert, the part of the diaper that absorbs the pee, is missing from this diaper. As a cloth diapering Mom and blogger, I have a huge assortment of inserts for absorbency. Since this diaper doesn’t come with an insert, I needed to test a few things out. My favorite? A good old standby…prefolds! What’s a prefold? It’s shaped like a kitchen towel, but thicker, and can be folded into thirds to fit in the pocket.
A prefold+booster lasts overnight! It’s a natrual fiber, great absorbency, doesn’t get the stink issues our microfiber inserts do and are very reasonably priced. You can find the largest assortment of the Big at Nicki’s Diapers + their brand prefolds for around $2 each depending on size. A Medium may fit this diaper best in it’s smallest position but we are using large and when I put the diaper on my son it extends and fits well. Shop Nicki’s here.
bumGenius Big Fit
My son is about 47 lbs and wears a size 6-7 pants. One leg is a bit thinner, but overall I feel like this diaper runs large. At 47 lbs, he’s nearly at the smallest setting and I felt like it could even use another row of snaps to snug-up the crotch. However, it is still a trimmer fit than the other larger cloth diapers we have tried!
The cut through the groin is great. Unlike a traditional cloth diaper for a baby, this is trim just like a pair of underwear and even looks more trim under my son’s pants than some of the other brands we’ve tried!
bumGenius Big compares to bumGenius 5.0
If you have a child wearing bumGenius 5.0s and are nearing the end of fit, you may be wondering if this is the next step up. As you can see below. The BG 5.0 has a drastically different cut. As you can see, the bumGenius Big is more narrow through the groin, like a pair of underwear, and the BG 5.0 is cut wider. In addition, this diaper is large on my 47-lb son. Now, this may be due to the shape of his body, but I would have to try this on a 35-lb baby to get an idea of fit.
Below you can see the BG 5.0 in it’s largest next to the BG Big in the smallest setting.
Price. Currently $39.95 each! Ouch. Plus, they don’t come with an insert so you also need to purchase one or use one you already have. An Applecheeks size 3 is around $23 and a size 4 around $25. However, the Applecheeks don’t offer the rise snaps or the trim fit. These did come down to around $33 for Black Friday sales, so it is possible to find them on sale…I just don’t think it will be often. I hope overall they find a lower price point as time goes on so these are more affordable for all.
The rise snaps. I don’t know what to say about them except for that they don’t seem as strong as our infant sized diapers. I contacted the company who said it must be fit…which it’s not. When I pull on the diaper to adjust it they simply unsnap with a light amount of force. I may exchange these as a result.
Best place to buy the Big
The Big is available in huge selection from my affiliate at Nickis’ Diapers and it’s also where I found them on sale!
My second choice is Kelly’s Closet. They have great customer service & shipping but not as many prints.
Other retailers I’ve searched don’t have them available yet, or possibly are not going to carry them at all.
