bumGenius diapers were our first pockets. I bought two bumGenius 4.0 pockets and grew our stash from there. At it’s peak, I had 18 bumGenius pocket diapers and a stash of prefolds and covers. I thought the BG 4.0 system was pretty perfect and waited eagerly to see the bum genius 5.0 release. I thought, natural fibers? That was the only improvement I could see that would really floor the cloth diapering community.
When the BG 5.0 was released with a new lining and what cottonbabies reports (I didn’t actually open up my diaper) is better elastic I thought…eh. They should have gone for natural fibers! Why? Natural fibers, like prefolds, are more absorbent, not subject to compression leaks and don’t get stinky and funky over time. While I do enjoy a natural fiber/synthetic combo for night pocket stuffing, when it comes to diaper inserts natural is better! This is a sponsored post.
bumGenius diapers made a name for themselves with their pocket diaper first released in 2005. Since then, they have released several models. The latest, the bumGenius 5.0, replaces it’s predecessor, the bumGenius 4.0. When I first opened the BG 5.0 diaper I immediately noticed a difference in the lining. It feels softer, has a brighter and more even appearance and feels a bit stretchy. The leg elastic? That I can’t see but I’ll take their word for the improvement. The insert? While I wish they upgraded the insert…it’s possible to stuff bumGenius diapers with natural inserts!
The BG 5.0 shell is sold without the microfiber inserts by Green Mountain Diapers and they just happen to sell the famous GMD prefolds that fit perfectly inside. Well known to be absorbent, durable and leading the prefold market GMD prefolds pair perfectly with this pocket. Simply try-fold, or soaker fold, the prefold and use it inside of the pocket opening!
Below you can see fully prepped prefolds and the diaper in large, medium and small setting. The prefolds not only fit inside the pocket easily, there is room! I often stuff a prefold plus a full-size microfiber insert or booster for night time diapering. Simply stuff the diaper before placing on baby and unstuff before washing. All the benefits of natural fibers plus the stay dry lining a pocket offers.

Overall? It seemed natural to stuff my pockets with GMD prefolds. I started a few years ago, because they’re simply better then the microfiber insert, and can vouch for their durability. I’m thrilled to see the bumGenius diapers sold microfiber insert-free with the option for prefolds. It’s the best of both worlds. A great natural fiber absorbent prefold plus possibly the best selling diaper shell on the market.
Fit. Below you can see my baby at 26lbs on medium rise setting with the green edge prefold. It’s trim, absorbent and nice leg closure. There is room for extra stuffing even with a full size prepped prefold inside. Boosters can be added, flats or anything you can imagine using for absorbency. The red edge prefold does increase the bulk because it’s a more absorbent prefold. This may be noticeable on small baby and using a smaller prefold is recommended for best fit. However, with a great pair of maxaloones you can stuff this pocket to the Max!
Green Mountain Diapers has a huge selection of prefolds and I can attest to their durability and absorbency. They are my favorite prefold! The prefolds are sold in bleached, unbleached and organic all with excellent performance. You can read my green mountain diaper prefold review to see how much they shrink and how to prepare them. Some of the prefolds in our stash are nearly 3 years old and still going strong!
Why cotton over microfiber in bumGenis diapers? When I first heard about this preference I was confused. The microfiber inserts from our bumGenius 4.0 diapers were working well. It wasn’t until they really started to wear and develop stubborn, wretched odor, that I understood. Our cotton prefolds and inserts were really out-performing our microfiber in both absorbency and didn’t have the odor and staining that the microfiber inserts developed. In addition, both the BG 5.0 shell and GMD prefolds sun well! That being said, I do like pairing a MF insert with a prefold at night. However, there are days that I want to throw them all in the garbage but the eco-friendly side of me just can’t do it!
