bumGenius 5.0 Review

bumgenius 5.0 review

bumGenius diapers were our first pockets. I bought two bumGenius 4.0 pockets and grew our stash from there. At it’s peak, I had 18 bumGenius pocket diapers and a stash of prefolds and covers. I thought the BG 4.0 system was pretty perfect and waited eagerly to see the bum genius 5.0 release. I thought, natural fibers? That was the only improvement I could see that would really floor the cloth diapering community.

When the BG 5.0 was released with a new lining and what cottonbabies reports (I didn’t actually open up my diaper) is better elastic I thought…eh. They should have gone for natural fibers! Why? Natural fibers, like prefolds, are more absorbent, not subject to compression leaks and don’t get stinky and funky over time. While I do enjoy a natural fiber/synthetic combo for night pocket stuffing, when it comes to diaper inserts natural is better! This is a sponsored post.

bumgenius 5.0 review

bumGenius diapers made a name for themselves with their pocket diaper first released in 2005. Since then, they have released several models. The latest, the bumGenius 5.0, replaces it’s predecessor, the bumGenius 4.0. When I first opened the BG 5.0 diaper I immediately noticed a difference in the lining. It feels softer, has a brighter and more even appearance and feels a bit stretchy. The leg elastic? That I can’t see but I’ll take their word for the improvement. The insert? While I wish they upgraded the insert…it’s possible to stuff bumGenius diapers with natural inserts!

The BG 5.0 shell is sold without the microfiber inserts by Green Mountain Diapers and they just happen to sell the famous GMD prefolds that fit perfectly inside. Well known to be absorbent, durable and leading the prefold market GMD prefolds pair perfectly with this pocket. Simply try-fold, or soaker fold, the prefold and use it inside of the pocket opening!

Below you can see fully prepped prefolds and the diaper in large, medium and small setting. The prefolds not only fit inside the pocket easily, there is room! I often stuff a prefold plus a full-size microfiber insert or booster for night time diapering. Simply stuff the diaper before placing on baby and unstuff before washing. All the benefits of natural fibers plus the stay dry lining a pocket offers.

bumGenius diapers 5.0 Shell Features include:

  • Made in the USA
  • Stay-dry lining with stretch
  • Pocket diaper with generous opening for stuffing
  • Okeo-Tex certification 100
  • CPSIA compliant
  • Fits approximately 7-35lbs
  • 3 rows of 3 rise snaps to adjust depth
  • Wash and wear well
  • Same design as 4.0 with some upgrades
    • elastic and stay dry lining

BumGenius diapers released the bumGenius 5.0 diaper with upgrades from the BG 4.0. This cloth diaper is poplar among families and a staple in the cloth diaper community. See the upgrades and how to stuff a pocket diaper with natural fibers.

Overall? It seemed natural to stuff my pockets with GMD prefolds. I started a few years ago, because they’re simply better then the microfiber insert, and can vouch for their durability. I’m thrilled to see the bumGenius diapers sold microfiber insert-free with the option for prefolds. It’s the best of both worlds. A great natural fiber absorbent prefold plus possibly the best selling diaper shell on the market.

Fit. Below you can see my baby at 26lbs on medium rise setting with the green edge prefold. It’s trim, absorbent and nice leg closure. There is room for extra stuffing even with a full size prepped prefold inside. Boosters can be added, flats or anything you can imagine using for absorbency. The red edge prefold does increase the bulk because it’s a more absorbent prefold. This may be noticeable on small baby and using a smaller prefold is recommended for best fit. However, with a great pair of maxaloones you can stuff this pocket to the Max!

Green Mountain Diapers has a huge selection of prefolds and I can attest to their durability and absorbency. They are my favorite prefold! The prefolds are sold in bleached, unbleached and organic all with excellent performance. You can read my green mountain diaper prefold review to see how much they shrink and how to prepare them. Some of the prefolds in our stash are nearly 3 years old and still going strong!

Why cotton over microfiber in bumGenis diapers? When I first heard about this preference I was confused. The microfiber inserts from our bumGenius 4.0 diapers were working well. It wasn’t until they really started to wear and develop stubborn, wretched odor, that I understood. Our cotton prefolds and inserts were really out-performing our microfiber in both absorbency and didn’t have the odor and staining that the microfiber inserts developed. In addition, both the BG 5.0 shell and GMD prefolds sun well! That being said, I do like pairing a MF insert with a prefold at night. However, there are days that I want to throw them all in the garbage but the eco-friendly side of me just can’t do it!

I haven’t used cloth diapers since the 80’s. They have really come a long way from the pins and plastic pants. I am awaiting my first grand child due in February and trying to decide which brand to buy. Would love to try them all.

Ny very first cloth diaper was a BG. But my baby was only 8 pounds and drowned in it! I thought they would never work! Then I realized once he got bigger I could put prefolds inside, pr whatever I wanted. I now love my BG diapers and the 5.0 seems perfect for our stash! We started at newborn 8lbs and now we are 9 months and 24 pounds rocking our BG fluff daily. Green mountain seems to have a quality prefold, I have no experience with the company except I have some tea and coffee (not sure if its the same people). I look forward to trying these prefolds!

Yes! The tea and coffee is greenmountaincoffee, different company, also one of my favorites! GMD prefolds are my favorite and I’ve tried 6 other brands if that helps! I use them on my older child at night stuffed inside of an AppleCheeks size 3 too.

I havnt tried bumgenius pockets yet, but i’ve loved their flip covers and i understand the fit is the same 🙂 You just cant beat the quality of GMD prefolds though! I’ve tried so many brands of prefolds and GMD has them all beat in quality AND fit. Nothing makes me happier than good quality organic cotton – so soft and absorbent! I think they have the right idea pairing the pockets with their prefolds, so glad theres a MF free option. I never wanted to buy the pockets and just throw the included insert away (we are a MF free house, no exceptions!) Thank you for the great review!

I actually just bought a BumGenius 5.0 to use at night, but I’m planning to stuff it with a Hemp Babies flat and a GMD hemp doubler. We use GMD prefolds with Flip covers and BumGenius Elementals during the day but need the stay dry quality of the pocket for nighttime. Fingers crossed that this will be our nighttime solution!

We’re trying to make the switch to more natural products for our baby and in our home. I’d love to be introduced to cloth diapering with this product! Do the exposed button snaps ever irritate the baby’s legs?

Hi! We have tried over 35 brands and haven’t found any snaps that irritate baby’s legs. I have had a few brands with velcro that makes red marks on the belly and legs, but the snaps seem to be pretty fool proof! I like them better too because baby eventually gets to a point where he can remove the velcro for a nude streak through the house and won’t leave the diaper on!

I started my stash with 4.0s, but wow that Pepper is super bright. I also use GMD yellow edge prefolds with them because they are more absorbent than the microfiber inserts.

When I was recovering from my vaginal birth, the new microfiber felt great to gently use in the shower as a wash cloth on my stitches.

I love the idea of stuffing pocket diapers with prefolds! I used bum genius pockets with my first baby, but the microfiber inserts were smelly and I felt like I could never get them clean. I used pinned GMD prefolds with Flip covers with my next babies. They were so easy to keep clean, but I missed the ease of diaper changes with just one piece to adjust and close. Best of both worlds! The improved elastic sounds fantastic as well, I replaced the stretched out elastic in most of my first baby’s diapers and that was not very fun!

That is interesting to know that the cotton prefolds are out-performing the microfiber! I assume that hemp absorbs more, but didn’t realize that it is true with cotton, too. I also like that the non-microfiber materials are not as bulky! I have a few prefolds and hemp things in my growing collection, but would like to try some of these GMD prefolds!! And the 5.0 sounds great! Thank you for doing this review.

I have many brands of pocket diapers and we threw out the microfiber inserts months ago and use blue edge intermediate size prefolds in ALL pockets. Nothing else even compares. They are the best absorbency I’ve ever found and come so much cleaner in the wash. I don’t think I could ever go back to microfiber.

I am very curious about prefolds for a future newborn! I currently stuff my OS (some Bumgenius – but old ones. They’ve held up great) with a FST and a natural fibre doubler. I like the idea that a prefold that fits when they’re tiny can do double duty as a doubler when they’re bigger!
