I always loved hummus. Up until I met my middle-eastern husband, I was buying hummus from the store. The first time I watched my mother-in-law whip hip hummus in her food processor, I felt silly for buying it! Hummus is so easy to make! Better yet, I make hummus for my kids at home with organic ingredients. It’s tasty, my kids love it and easy to make in minutes. The bulk of hummus comes from chic peas, or garbanzo beans. I buy organic garbanzo beans at our Wegmans for .99/15oz can. Other important ingredients are tahini (sesame seed paste), lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, galic (optional), salt and water (if needed). These ingredients are a balance and I taste this two or three times before it’s done. The strength of the lemon juice is important and high quality is a must. If I have time, and lemons, I squeeze it myself. If I don’t, I use this Santa Cruz organic lemon juice and sometimes it’s even better then fresh squeezed! Post contains affiliate links.
- 15 oz can organic garbanzo beans (chicpeas)
- 3-4 tbsp good quality lemon juice
- More or less for taste and quality of juice
- 1/4 c good quality tahini (make sure to mix well)
- 1 tsp Salt
- More or less for preference
- 2-3 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil.
- 1-2 tsp water (if needed)
- Paprika and parsley for garnish
- Cooked garlic clove optional
- From time to time I get fancy and toss in olives, roasted red peppers and customize the hummus batch. The truth is you can make hummus with many ingredients!
First, open drain and rinse garbanzo beans. While you can use dried, I personally prefer canned. I’ve soaked, boiled and tried to soften dry beans but they never seem quite as smooth as the canned. Place in food processor with tahini, lemon juice, salt, and evoo. Pulse until mixed well. Evaluate mixture. If needed, add a few teaspoons of water for smoothness before pureeing.
Remember, less is more. It’s easy to add more to the mix but impossible to add less. Turn off the processor and taste a bit from a spoon. Salty enough? Enough lemon? Adjust for taste and mix again until very smooth. Serve with good quality pitas. Whole slices of bread can be torn by guests, or you can cut into triangles for easy dipping. For a low-carb or paleo option, serve with celery, carrots, slices of peppers or other vegetables.

See, easy! In addition to making this hummus, I’ve used the Oster Pro for making green smoothies. I never thought the blender attachment would do the great job my Nutribullet does but it does even better! It seriously pulverizes the green leaves and I can fit way more inside. It’s a very powerful blender and I love that it has all of the units. I used the food processor to cut up celery and onions for the Holiday and in just a few pulses it had everything neatly chopped!
