After cloth diapering my children for many years, I decided to green my menstrual cycle and switch to Reusable Menstrual Pads. However, I found that reusable pads made with organic cotton were hard to find…until now. These pads, made in Canada with fabrics manufactured in the USA, offer organic cotton and are better for the environment, my body and wallet. They are free from chemicals, reusable and more breathable then a disposable pad. Reusable Organic Cotton Menstrual Pads, like the Fabulous Flo series from Bummis, are super absorbent and can be used alone or with a Menstrual Cup. They won’t end up in a landfill, save money in the long run and are more comfortable then disposable pads. Check the line out below and see where you can purchase them:
We live in a throw-away society. Everything from the containers we drink out of to the products we use for menstruation are throw away. This disposable lifestyle is creating pollution throughout the planet and contributing to our chemical footprint. In addition to environmental concerns, these disposable products are made from and transfer chemicals to our body. Our skin is the largest organ and chemicals in our self care products transfer from it to our bloodstream. One of the most important areas, in my opinion, to avoid placing chemically made products is the vagina and associated regions. This area is vascular, contains sensitive areas and in a direct route to growing babies.
These reusable menstrual pads are organic cotton, have PUL (waterproof layer) on the backside and close around your underwear with a snap. The wings function very similarly to a disposable pad and hug your underwear while protecting the cloth from overflow. They have an assortment of colors and patterns, and come in multiple absorbances. Features include:
- Organic cotton
- Waterproof PUL backed
- Wings with snap closure
- Serged edges
- Textured Cotton
- Easy to wash
- Available in Panty Liners, Regular and Heavy Flow
- Trim and comfortable
- Absorbent at all flow levels
My experience. At first, I feared that these lightly colored pads would easily stain. To my surprise, they have been cleaning well. On heavy days, I do notice some discoloration. However, with a pre-rinse and a treatment (if needed) they have stayed relatively stain-free. A little discoloration is a small trade off to have organic, dye-free pads!
These are very comfortable and trim. It’s deceiving, because they are so trim fitting, however they pack a nice amount of absorbency. In addition, the PUL print sides are really attractive! Unlike reusable menstrual pads with a fleece or flannel back, these are waterproof like the outside layer of a cloth diaper. This means that blood or other fluids won’t pass through the pad and onto your underwear or clothing.
Room for improvement? While the waterproof PUL can slid around a tad, the wings help keep it secure. I found these to be a bit narrow in the wing closure and they fit my bikini underwear better then my hip huggers, however they still closed easily on my hip huggers and wear well. Would I purchase more of these? Yes! I adore them. Where can you find them? On the Bummis Website there are many Canadian Retailers. Also, My USA affiliate:
