Overnight cloth diapers can be challenging, without the right diaper that is. I’m always working on our routine. Getting rid of that last disposable was a big hurdle for me and through lots of trial and error, we’ve discovered that fitteds and a wool diaper cover is the best solution. A fitted cloth diaper is the most absorbent diaper and when covered by a natural fiber wool diaper cover, it’s the perfect combination.
If there was a manual for cloth diapering, getting a wool cover and fitted for night time would be a must-have purchase! Even my potty trained 3 – year old wears cloth at night for accidents. Luckily companies like my affiliate HumBird Creations cloth diapers make great overnight cloth diapers with organic cotton, organic wool in really exciting colors, great prices and custom embroidered designs! With a selection of fitteds, wool covers, longies, wool wraps, AI2s and sizes that go up to 8 years, I’m sure you’ll find something to love! Take a look at her fantastic creations below, that we received for review purposes.
If you follow my blog, and love finding Mom run Eco-friendly companies, then you’ll love HumBird too! With a passion for upcycling, repurposing and creating products responsibly, HumBird is a friend of Mother Earth…and well hydrated babies everywhere! HumBird Creations was founded in 2012 by a cloth diapering Mom, Dawn. She was inspired by her love for sewing (from Mom) and her father’s favorite bird, the Humming bird (as you may have guessed), in Germany. With worldwide shipping for as low as under $4 these diapers are a fast trip to locations all over the globe. Products include fitted diapers, wool covers, longies, wool wraps, AI2s and sizes that go up to 8 years!
I first became a fan of hybrid cloth diapers after trying her overnight cloth diapers. As a fan of pockets and prefolds with covers, I was a bit nervous trying anything new. Once I had one in my hands…our fitted stash took off from there! Unlike a diaper with a waterproof layer like PUL, an entire fitted diaper helps with absorption. This makes them excellent contenders for night-time diapering and HumBird has certainly taken absorption seriously. Take a look below at the many layers her fitted diapers have. As soon as I opened this I knew my son wouldn’t wake up soaked again. I have even used this diaper completely coverless at night! When it’s covered, we use a wool cover that has been lanolized. Find lanolizing cloth diapers intimidating? It’s so easy. Soooo easy. Take a look at this system below. Features include:
- One-size construction fits approximately 11-35/40 pounds. (seen on my 20lb baby here)
- Organic hemp/bamboo materials for ultra absorbency
- Three rows of Two rise snaps
- Crossover Waist Snaps
- 10 Waist Snaps
- Includes THREE inserts!! (Sandwich soaker, doubler and booster)
- CSPC Compliant
- Super absorbent, requires prepping as any natural fiber does.
- Inserts can be folded and configured for custom absorbency.
- Up to 15 layers of absorbency with all inserts!
- Gentle and effective elastic leaves my baby with zero red marks!
- Body: 100% Wool from the EU
- Waist and Legs (black part) 100% Organic Wool Jersey from Denmark!
- Waterproof once lanolized
- Wool is thin enough to be worn under clothing (although with the fitted it can get chunky)
- Posesses antimicrobial properties
- Serged at Seams, quality construction and extra effort! No corners cut here.
- Contoured stitching in groin area allows diaper to bend and fold where needed.
Performance. This is my 20lb baby here. He’s wearing a fitted with all the layers and a Large cover. I tried a Medium on him, and his fluffy badonka-donk just wouldn’t allow for me to pull it up! The large fits well and will last him awhile. As you can see in the photo, the Organic Wool Jersey (black waist and legs) is super soft and appears ribbed. It folds and bends as he moves making him very comfortable. The wool cover itself is trim would fit nicely over a pair of undies for someone potty training and even under pants! However, in this photo he’s in super fluff bum mode and goes with high socks, booties or baby leggings. The diaper is so absorbent that I rarely feel any sort of dampness on the cover itself, and we have actually gone overnight without a cover. I love the natural fibers, thoughtfulness and construction of this diaper.
Downsides? I don’t know if I’d consider it a downside, but I always like to include any aspect someone may find difficulty with. As with all of our fitted diapers, plus covers, this is bulkier then a day time option. Night time diapers just aren’t as thin as a prefold and covers, pocket diaper or even our AI2s. Luckily, HumBird makes Wool Wraps, All-in two (AI2) diapers and they are all reasonably priced and hand-made from high quality materials so you can have a night diaper and a day time diaper from her company!
