Taking Cloth Diapers on the Go With Multiple Children

Taking two children out and about with cloth diapers can be a challenge. Cloth diapers are bigger then disposables, and you don’t just throw them away when they get dirty. I have to take everything I need and transport it all back. At first, this seemed impossible. I was nervous about going out and eventually got my feet wet with small local trips. I would pack one diaper for every 2 hours for each child, plus extras. Soon, I learned that it was easy and fun. Yes, fun. I’ve looked at a lot of diaper bags and am thrilled to share Okiedog Shuttle bag with you. This Shuttle Diaper Bag not only takes enough cloth for 2 babies, but I also pack in extra outfits and goodies for me too! I call this the “get in the car boys!” Diaper bag.

Taking cloth diapers for two on the go can be tricky! Here's how to pack for two in cloth diapers, what to take and a great cloth diaper bag to use on the go.

This review was hard for me to do. Usually when I do a review I like to take photos of something brand new, so you know what it would look like if it arrived in your mailbox. However, shortly after I received this my son was born! 10 days early and I immediately put the bag to use. I kept thinking that I would unpack it to take photos, but as it turns out we need this bag. It is in constant use and always being packed, repacked and taken wherever we go! With two potty training, our baby in cloth full-time and the need for other items…this bag is packed. I knew I just had to start taking it’s photo in-use.I love having it and would recommend it to others looking for a great bag for multiple children.
To be honest, when I first opened the Okiedog Shuttle bag I thought it felt thin. I thought oh no…no way this is going to hold up. I was wrong. The fabric is durable and very easy to clean. Think of a cloth diaper cover, this is a similar material as PUL, durable and the bag has held it’s shape! Despite being shoved in the stroller, tossed into the back of the car, stepped on, trampled by the dog, drug around and taken on trips…it still looks great! In addition, it has lots of features and the entire line is reasonably priced as diaper bags go.

packing cloth diapers for two

It’s a good sized bag. At first I thought it would be too big. My husband was the one who fell in love with it first. “Isn’t it too big?” I asked. I know the answer to that question. He was right…but don’t tell him I said that! This bag is the “We’re going to Grandma’s!” bag. This diaper bag most recently went with us to Children’s Hospital. My son had his specialist follow-up appointment and I needed to travel 3 hours (each direction = 6 total) plus 3-4 hours at the appointment, take paperwork, a baby carrier and clothing to wear for x-ray and goodies. I somehow managed to forget a changing pad and used our Beco Gemini baby carrier and a prefold instead. I was thrilled to discover that they have wagons available to use and, even though I was a bit disappointed, didn’t need our toddler carrier.
How do you pack for multiple babies in cloth? Here’s how I pack and prepare. First, I think about where we might go and estimate how many hours it will take. I include the potential for unplanned stops (like Grandma’s) and accidents from my potty trainers. Inside the bag is:

  • 1 diaper per child for every 2 hours. Plus one or two extra.
    • Can be AIO diapers (take more room) or prefolds and covers (trimmer packing)
    • 6 hours = 3 diapers each, plus an extra. 2 children = 8 diapers total.
  • Reusable wipes (aka washcloths) dry, or wet in a second wetbag
  • Wetbag for dirty diapers
  • A urinal for my 3-year old for long drives
  • Extra outfit including socks
  • Wallet
  • Mama goodies including a reusable pad and inhaler
  • Emergency snacks and sippy cup
  • Changing Pad
  • Baby Carrier
