Flat Iron Experts QT Performance Wet to Dry Tourmaline Ceramic Review

Flat Iron Experts QT Performance Review

As a teen I struggled with my unruly hair. I grew up having thick, combination wavy and curly hair that never felt tamed. It wasn’t until I learned about straightening that I got control over my mane. I didn’t know anyone with textured hair like mine and my Mom grew up using a regular iron to flatten her tresses. Yes, the type you iron clothes with! Needless to say, my first hair iron was archaic. I picked up the first one I saw at our local big box store and it was just a step up from a 90’s crimping tool. It had 2 giant metal plates, damaged my hair and took over an hour to produce semi-strait tresses. Luckily, flat irons today have come a long way. While straightening they also add shine and smoothness without treating curls like a panini press. Win win.

I’ll admit that the length of my hair has gotten a bit out of control. As a busy Mom I don’t get to get my hair trimmed as often as I would like…or at all really. Taking 4 children, including a newborn, to the salon isn’t on my to-do list…so I’ve just let it grow. The next few weeks will be dramatic for my hair. I gave birth to our 4th squish just 5 weeks ago! From previous experience, I know that my hair will start to fall out from normal post-partum hair loss. Until then I’m going to care for it well, including using high quality tools like this QT Performance Wet to Dry Tourmaline Ceramaic Flat Iron from Flat Iron Experts, and get a good trim! See my before and after’s below!

The QT Performance Wet to Dry Tourmaline Ceramic Flat Iron from Flat Iron Experts  comes in this really attractive box. When I first opened it I thought about how professional it looks! What a nice gift, right? No wrapping needed! I wanted to test this out on my hair wet, but with how long my hair takes to dry I knew completely wet wasn’t going to work. I allowed my hair to air dry until it just felt damp to the touch (see before photos below) and started by ironing the bottom layer first, keeping all other hair on top of my head in a semi-bun. I started off at 300 degrees and increased to 380 before my hair started to straighten. I found 400 to be a good setting and can see steam escaping my strands at that temperature and can do my whole head in about 40 minutes.

Features of the QT Performance include:

  • Digital temperature setting up to 450 F (wow!)
  • Heats up to Max temperature in 30 seconds (faster for me)
  • 1 3/8″ Tourmaline Ceramic plates
  • Built-in Ion Generator
  • Negative Ion Technology
  • Far Infrared Heat
  • Smooth plates without catches or dragging
  • Textured handle to prevent slipping
  • One year limited warranty
  • Wet to Dry technology (damp to dry)
  • 360 degree swivel cord
  • Digital on-off switch (can be plugged in and ‘off’)

So what do all of those feature mean? The iron is designed to add shine, remove moisture from the inside out while sealing the cuticle and straighten easily. While the iron has a wide temperature range, I didn’t find that it straightened until I reached 380 F, but it did better at 400 F. I could probably take it up higher to get an even better straightening. I found myself trying to squeeze the iron because I didn’t feel like it was clamping down on my hair and straightening it. The plates are extremely smooth and they are capped on the ends so it won’t catch stray hairs. It’s something I’m getting used to; My old iron definitely had some drag and pulled out the occasional hair. I really like the digital heat buttons. I have an iron with a heat dial that is very easy to bump without knowing. Hair does need to be separated into small sections to straighten. I tried taking larger chunks noticed that that they didn’t straighten as well as the smaller sections. Still, I did my entire head in about 40 minutes without any product. This decreased my iron time by 20m which is fantastic!
I noticed that the next day (I slept on my hair) my tresses looked even better and were very very silky. My hair tie wouldn’t stay in and kept sliding out. What else did I use? While I have washed my hair with everything from expensive Aveda shampoo to the economy versions, my favorite is Suave Sleek Shampoo and Conditioner. I can use a handful of the product and it doesn’t break the bank while giving me really great results. I didn’t use any product here, but imagine what it will look like when I do! Silky smooth. While the 1 3/8″ plates are great for my long hair, it’s a little more difficult to navigate bangs and I do keep a teeny tiny iron around for the shorter bangs I have occasionally.

I don’t iron my hair daily. I used to, but it’s now something I do once in awhile and I then leave it straight for 2-3 days with touch-ups only. You can find this iron as well as a gigantic selection of professional tools reasonably priced on the Flat Iron Experts website.

However, I recently checked up on this review and found that the website is not working. I’m not sure if that means they’re out of business or just haven’t renewed but their FB page has also not been updated since April 2016 as of today 10/17/17.
