D-Link HD Pan and Tilt Wi-Fi Baby Camera Review

There are many reasons to need a baby monitor. When I had my first son, I didn’t understand the need for a video monitor; I purchased a sound only monitor for around $100. I thought it would do everything I needed and I was sooooo wrong. I found myself unable to do things like wash the dishes without sneaking down the hall repeatedly to look at my baby. This permeated into night time too, and my Mom instincts told me I needed to see my baby to feel content. I wanted to see that he wasn’t laying on his face, that he was breathing comfortably and that overall he looked content.
While monitoring one baby has it’s challenges, soon we will have our 4th baby…and our youngest will be 4 (almost 5) when he’s born. Not only do I want to see my baby for all the same reasons I did when I had one, but now I need to see him to ensure his brothers aren’t unintentionally causing him any harm or distress.
I’m very excited to try out the D-Link DCS-855L HD Pan and Tilt Wi-Fi Baby Camera. This is a great unit. One of the first things I noticed about it was it’s weight. Have you ever picked something up and could tell that it was high quality just by the weight and how it felt in your hands? This is true with this unit, it has a great weight and feel and can be monitored from any mobile device with the mydlink Baby App.

Features include:

  • Pan & Tilt
  • HD 720p High Quality Video
  • Sound and Motion detection
  • Micro SD Card Slot (for Scheduled Recording or Personalized music)
  • Temperature alerts
  • Push Notifications
  • mydlink Baby App for Mobile Devices (Google Play and App store)
  • Remote Viewing
  • Two-Way Viewing
  • Take snap shots and video directly to mobile devices!!
  • 16 Feet of Visibility in the dark
  • Infrared Night Vision turns on automatically when it gets dark
  • 5 Classic Lullabies
  • 4x Digital Zoom
  • Choice of Blue, White or Pink Accent Rings for Camera
  • Password/e-mail address activated app for security

In addition to the camera, the package included a wall mount with an adjustable arm and 2 screws/grommets, a long cord and plug, two prongs that need to be installed to complete the plug, one set of blue and one set of pink rings for the camera. I opted to leave our monitor white, partially because it didn’t match our nursery…partially because I just cut my finger nails super short and I couldn’t get the white ring off to show how the colored rings look! The camera is a generous size. The black portion moves up and down, and the camera head itself turns at the neck to create horizontal views. It’s really impressive.

After getting the camera powered up and downloading the app, my next task was to get it synced with our devices. I will admit that this gave me some technical trouble. While I’d like to consider myself tech-savvy, sometimes things just work better with help from a technician. I downloaded the D-link baby monitor app and tried a few times to hook it up with the camera. I felt a little silly calling tech support (at 1-877-453-5465 and choose prompt for baby cameras), but my agent Randy (who said I should include his agent number AR004611 here) and I was hooked up in no time! I don’t know why I waited so long to call, but setting this up was easy and before I knew it hubby could see us from work over his Samsung phone! The app works with Apple and Android devices, and once the initial setup was done on my Ipad mini, the app simply had to be downloaded and logged-into (using the password and e-mail address I used to setup our D-Link account) on other devices.

As you can see above, I was ridiculously happy to have this setup!  I called my husband and in seconds he was logged in and talking to us through the camera. There is a delay, maybe two seconds or so…but I think that’s pretty impressive considering he was about a half hour away! So excited. I will need to relocate this; As you can see from behind me the sunshine coming through the window is super over exposed. I had to move the camera near the window now and point it into the room to capitalize on the natural light. Something else I should mention is the firmware update. This took about 10 minutes and needed to be completed before I could actually start viewing through the camera. Firmware was updated to the camera itself and it allowed me to start using it right away when it finished. After making a few minor adjustments including changing the temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit and setting the temp alarm, we were ready to go!
Make sure to visit the D-Link website to see their full line of products and follow them on Facebook for updates and news. In addition to making baby monitors, they offer a whole line of home and business monitoring products. You can find this camera on Amazon, one of my favorite places to shop and at many retailers nationwide!

I so wish we had these when my kiddos were little! I agree you need to SEE the baby! Not just HEAR the baby. Sure something may SOUND okay but how does one REALLY know!? Baby sounds can be deceiving!

This is great for keeping track of what's happening with baby when they are in their nursery. I love how compact it is and easy to use.
