June 27 marks the 1st anniversary of a movement called Normalize Breastfeeding. Mother of 3, photographer, and founder, Vanessa Simmons, began photographing breastfeeding mothers, specifically, and establishing an intricate international breastfeeding support system in June of last year to accomplish her mission: to document diverse variations of normal breastfeeding, by normalizing the many methods of breast milk delivery (nursing, pumping, and donated breast milk). The vision of NormalizeBreastfeeding.org, a breastfeeding awareness media campaign, was to use the campaign to remove the “taboo” from public breastfeeding in our modern society. On June 27, 2015, a Proclamation has been approved to be published by San Diego Mayor, Kevin Faulconer, proclaiming the first International Day to Normalize Breastfeeding. What breastfeeding looks like is different for mothers depending on their community of lactation support, culture, birth experience, method of delivery, financial circumstance, and their knowledge of its benefits for their baby, toddler, or child. For this first year the goal is to rally breastfeeding supporters locally and worldwide to align with this year’s theme: Take the Pledge to Normalize Breastfeeding. Topics that will be discussed, in a LIVE streaming podcast format to continue the efforts on this day, will assist others to support every delivery method as “breast-milk-feeding” whether it is nursing, pumping, or the use of donated breast milk, to encourage full term breastfeeding and child-led weaning relationships according to the WHO breastfeeding code, to further discuss the importance of skin to skin contact, to debunk feeding myths and address “closet breastfeeding” among black breastfeeding mothers who still suffer from the lowest breastfeeding rates in United States, to ask moms to “check-in” to public places where they breastfeed and describe their experience, to ask businesses to take the initiative in thanking mothers for breastfeeding in their establishment and post the state laws for breastfeeding to educate the public against discrimination, share the significance of #Brelfie and professional Breastfeeding Portrait Photography by sharing historical images of breastfeeding mothers, and to publicly thank celebrities breastfeeding in public and sharing their most precious breastfeeding moments. Vanessa believes that, in sharing publicly, they have inspired a generation of women to, “nurse or pump whenever necessary, nourish their baby, toddler or child with breast milk as often as possible until they are ready to stop.”
